Glen Garioch (pronounced “Glen-giery”) is located just 27 km from Aberdeen on the outskirts of the village of Oldmeldrum, which is better known for its offshore oil production. The distillery therefore occupies a peripheral position in the Highlands whisky region, away from its nearest neighbors. The “Garioch” valley, where the distillery is located, is also known as the “granary of Aberdeenshire” – the best barley in Scotland grows here. Glengarioch (only the whisky is spelled “Glen Garioch”) is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. The current owners produce a “1797 Founder’s Reserve”. Glen Garioch is part of the Beam Global group. The distillery demonstrates an exemplary awareness of the sustainable use of water, which is an indispensable but limited resource for whisky production – and not just since it became part of Beam Global. The company was an early adopter of consistent water management. Glengarioch closed in 1968 due to water shortages. The water problem was solved in 1972 when the “silent spring of Coutons Farm” was discovered with the help of a dowser on the neighboring Coutens Farm. It could neither be seen nor heard. This discovery allowed the distillery to increase its production tenfold. The Glen Garioch 11 year old is the second bottling from PURE.WHISKY with a focus on “water” after the Ardmore 11 year old.
